Speaker Susan Gendron July 23, 2012
A 35-year veteran in the field of education, Sue began her career as a kindergarten teacher in Windham, Maine. After nine years in the classroom, she moved on to become an elementary principal, high school principal, superintendent, and commissioner of education. She has received numerous awards, including the Maine School Superintendents' Distinguished Educator Award (2001), Maine Superintendent of the Year Award (2002), University of Southern Maine Distinguished Alumni Award (2006) and the State Education Technology Directors Association "Pushing the Envelope" Award (2008). Governor Baldacci of Maine noted that Sue built "a culture in Maine that all students need to graduate ready for college, career, and citizenship." Sue led Maine to become the only state with one-on-one computing for every grade 7-12 student. Maine also drives high academic standards by using the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) as the state's 11th grade assessment and has invested in a major expansion of public preschool programs.
